Get Your Yard Ready for Thanksgiving Guests

By Isaac Einstein ·

Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away, and a lot of families around Seminole, Largo and the beaches will have people coming over. Before the turkey goes in the oven, guests see your yard first. The good news is you don't need a big makeover. A few simple jobs spread out over the next couple of weeks make a big difference, and I'll walk you through how I'd plan it.

Start a couple of weeks early

The biggest mistake I see is waiting until the day before. Grass grows slower in the fall here, but it still grows, and some jobs like shrub trimming look better after a few days to settle in. If you start about two weeks out, you can do the heavier work first and save a quick touch-up for the last few days.

Here's a simple plan:

  • Two weeks out: trim shrubs, pull weeds from beds, and clear out any dead plants or old pots.
  • One week out: do a full mow and edge, and haul away the debris piles.
  • A day or two before: a light touch-up mow if needed, blow off walkways, and tidy the entry.

Trim shrubs so they look neat, not chopped

Shrubs along the front of the house and the driveway are what people notice when they walk up. Trim off the long shoots that stick out and anything hanging over the sidewalk, but don't cut them way back. A neat, even shape looks better than a big hard cut, and it gives the plant time to look natural again before guests arrive.

If you have hedges near the door, keep the top a little narrower than the bottom. That way light reaches the lower leaves and the hedge doesn't look thin at the base.

Hand pull weeds in the beds

Flower beds are right next to the front door, so weeds there really stand out. Pulling them by hand after a rain or after watering is a lot easier because the roots come out whole. Get the whole root if you can, or it'll just come back. Once the beds are clear, a quick rake to smooth things out makes them look fresh.

Mow and edge about a week before

A clean mow with sharp edges along the driveway and sidewalk is what makes a yard look "done." I like to mow about a week before guests come, so the grass has a few days to even out and doesn't look freshly scalped. Keep the mower at a normal height for your grass. Cutting it extra short to make it last longer usually just turns it brown and patchy.

Edging is the part people skip, but it's what makes the lawn look sharp. A clean line along the concrete makes the whole front look neater, even if the grass isn't perfect.

Clear the walkways and parking areas

Think about where your guests will actually walk and park. Blow grass clippings, leaves and sand off the driveway, sidewalk and front steps. If guests will park on the street or in the swale, check that area too for sticks, palm fronds or anything sharp. If you've got outdoor space out back where people will hang out, give the patio or lanai the same quick sweep.

Get rid of the debris piles

After trimming and cleanup, you'll probably end up with a pile of branches, fronds and clippings. Don't leave it sitting by the curb or along the side of the house where everyone sees it. Bag it, bundle it, or get it hauled away before the big day so the yard looks finished.

Last-day touch-ups

The day before, take a quick walk around the front of the house like you're a guest. Pick up anything that blew in, straighten the hose, move trash cans out of sight, and make sure the path to the door is clear and easy to walk at night. Little things like that make the biggest first impression.
