Palm Frond Cleanup Tips for Seminole Yards

By Isaac Einstein ·

Hi, I'm Isaac, the owner of Ready 2 Mow. If you live in Seminole or anywhere near the beaches, you probably have at least one palm tree in your yard. Palms look great, but they also drop a lot of stuff: brown fronds, seed pods, husks and little bits that end up all over the grass. Fall is a good time to get on top of it, so here's how I handle palm mess when I'm working on a yard.

Why Fallen Fronds Are a Problem

A dead palm frond on the lawn might not look like a big deal, but it causes more trouble than you'd think.

  • It shades and smothers the grass. A big frond lying on St. Augustine for a week or two can leave a yellow patch underneath it.
  • It's hard on mowers. Fronds are tough and stringy. Running over one can wrap around the blade and leave shredded pieces everywhere.
  • It can hurt people. Some palm fronds have sharp spines near the base. Kids and pets running around the yard can get poked.
  • It gives bugs a hiding spot. Piles of fronds and husks stay damp underneath, which is a good place for critters to move in.

That's why I always walk the yard and pick up fronds before I start mowing.

What to Pick Up First

When I do a palm cleanup, I go in this order:

  1. Whole fronds on the lawn. These do the most damage to the grass, so they go first.
  2. Fronds in the flower beds and along the edges. They get tangled in shrubs and make beds look messy.
  3. Seed pods and fruit. Some palms drop clusters of seeds or small fruit that roll everywhere and can stain driveways and walkways.
  4. Husks and small debris. The little brown pieces that fall from the trunk add up fast, especially around the base of the tree.

Wear gloves for this job. Palm fronds can be sharp, and the stems are rough on your hands.

Make Fronds Easier to Haul

Long fronds don't fit well in a yard waste bin or a bag. I cut them into shorter pieces with loppers or a pruning saw so they stack neatly. Bundling them with twine also makes them a lot easier to carry. Check with your city or county on how they want yard waste set out, because the rules aren't the same everywhere in Pinellas.

If you don't want to deal with it at all, that's one of the things I do. I haul away the yard debris I pick up, so you're not stuck with a pile at the curb.

Don't Forget Under the Tree

The area right around the base of a palm is easy to miss. Seeds that sit there can sprout into little baby palms in your flower beds and grass. Pulling those up while they're small is way easier than waiting until they have a deep root. I check under every palm and pull any sprouts by hand when I'm doing weeding.

It's also a good spot to tidy up the mulch ring, if you have one. Keep mulch pulled back a little from the trunk instead of piling it up against it.

What I Don't Do

I want to be clear so nobody's surprised. I pick up fronds and debris that have already fallen, and I clean up around the base of the tree. I don't climb palms or do tree work up high. If your palm needs fronds cut from the top, it's best to call a tree service for that part. Once they're done, I'm happy to help with the cleanup on the ground.

After a Windy Day

Even a regular afternoon storm can knock down a bunch of fronds at once. After strong wind or a big storm, it's smart to do a quick walk around your yard:

  • Pick up anything that could become a tripping hazard.
  • Clear fronds off walkways and the driveway.
  • Look for fronds stuck on top of shrubs or hedges.
  • Get debris off the lawn before it has time to shade out the grass.

Doing this soon after the weather clears keeps your lawn healthier and your yard looking good.

Keep It Looking Good All Fall

A palm cleanup goes great with a regular mow, edge and blow. When the fronds and pods are gone, the lawn gets cut evenly and the whole yard looks finished.
