Keep Grass Clippings Out of the Street

By Isaac Einstein ·

Hi, I'm Isaac, the owner of Ready 2 Mow. After every mow, there's one last step I never skip: blowing the grass clippings and leaves off the driveway, sidewalk and street. It only takes a few minutes, but it makes a big difference in how a yard looks and in what ends up in our water. Here's how I do it and why it matters here in Seminole.

Why clippings on pavement are a problem

Grass clippings are great when they stay on the lawn. They break down and feed the soil. But when they land on concrete or asphalt, they turn into a mess:

  • They get slippery. Wet clippings on a sidewalk or driveway can be easy to slip on, especially after one of our afternoon showers.
  • They stain. Fresh green clippings sitting on light concrete in the Florida sun can leave marks.
  • They wash into storm drains. Storm drains generally carry rainwater toward nearby lakes, bayous and the Gulf rather than to a treatment plant. Grass and leaves that wash in add extra plant material to the water as they break down.

That last one is a big deal for a peninsula surrounded by water. Keeping yard debris out of the street is one of the easiest ways to help.

Blow toward the lawn, not the road

The most important habit is simple: point the blower back toward the grass. A lot of people blow everything into the street because it's fast. Instead, I start at the edge of the street and work back toward the yard, pushing clippings onto the lawn where they belong.

A few tips that help:

  1. Start at the curb. Clear the gutter line first so nothing sits there waiting for the next rain.
  2. Work in one direction. Sweep across the driveway in rows, like mowing, so you don't keep blowing the same pile around.
  3. Use a lower speed near beds. Mulch and small rocks fly easily. Ease off near flower beds so you don't undo all that bed work.
  4. Watch for people and cars. Stop or turn the blower away when someone walks by. Nobody wants a face full of dust.

Mow so there's less to clean up

Good mowing habits mean fewer clippings end up on the pavement to begin with:

  • Mow the first two passes with the discharge facing the lawn. Along the driveway and sidewalk, I make sure the chute throws clippings toward the grass, not the concrete.
  • Don't mow wet grass if you can wait. Wet clippings clump and stick to everything, including the driveway.
  • Keep blades sharp. Sharp blades make clean cuts and smaller clippings that settle into the lawn instead of blowing around.
  • Don't take off too much at once. Shorter, regular mows leave smaller clippings that disappear into the turf.

What about piles of leaves and debris?

In fall, oak leaves, palm fronds and seagrape leaves pile up faster than the lawn can break them down. Small amounts can be mowed or mulched right into the grass. Bigger piles are better raked or bagged.

Whatever you do, avoid sweeping big piles into the gutter or leaving them at the curb in a loose heap where rain can carry them off. Bag them or check your city's yard waste pickup info for how they want it set out. I haul away yard debris as part of my service, so customers don't have to deal with it at all.

Don't forget the hidden spots

When I finish a yard, I take a quick walk around and check spots people miss:

  • Behind parked cars in the driveway
  • Along the front walkway and porch steps
  • Pool decks and patios near the lawn
  • Window sills and A/C units next to freshly edged areas

A quick blast of air on each spot keeps the whole property looking finished, not just the lawn.

A clean finish every time

A well-mowed lawn looks great, but crisp, clean pavement around it is what really makes a yard look cared for. It's also a small way to help keep our local waters cleaner.
