Hi, I'm Isaac, the owner of Ready 2 Mow. Halloween is one of my favorite nights of the year in Seminole. Lots of kids walk the neighborhood, and the front yard is the first thing they see when they come up to your door. A little yard work before the big night makes your house look great, and it also makes the walk to your door safer for trick-or-treaters in the dark.
Here's the simple checklist I'd follow to get a front yard ready.
Mow a day or two before
Try to mow a day or two ahead of time, not the afternoon of. That gives the grass time to settle and gives you a buffer if it rains. Keep your normal mowing height. Cutting the lawn extra short to make it look neat can stress St. Augustine and leave it looking thin and brown instead of tidy. Just a regular cut with a sharp blade gives you that clean, even look.
Edge the walkway and driveway
Edging is the step that makes a yard look finished. A crisp line along the sidewalk, the driveway and the path to your front door shows people exactly where to walk, which really helps at night. If grass has crept out over the concrete, trimming it back also gives kids a little more room on the path.
Clear trip hazards from the path
This is the most important one. Walk from the street to your front door the way a kid would and look for anything that could trip someone:
- Fallen palm fronds, sticks and seed pods
- Garden hoses stretched across the grass or the path
- Loose pavers or edging stones
- Toys, tools or empty pots left out
Coil up hoses and put away anything that doesn't need to be there. It only takes a few minutes, and it's the kind of thing that's easy to miss in daylight but easy to trip over in the dark.
Blow off the walkway and steps
After mowing and edging, blow the grass clippings off the sidewalk, driveway and front steps. Clippings and wet leaves can be slippery, especially if the sprinklers ran that morning. A clean walkway also makes your decorations stand out more.
Give the shrubs by the door a light touch-up
You don't need a big trim this time of year. Just snip back any branches that stick out into the walkway or hang over the steps, so nobody gets poked or has to duck. If the shrubs block your porch light or your house number, trim those spots too. Good light and a clear path make your house easier to find and safer to walk up to.
Hand-pull weeds in the front beds
Front flower beds are right where people look when they're waiting at the door. Pull the obvious weeds by hand, roots and all, and the beds will look much neater. Doing it after a rain makes it easier, because the soil is softer and the roots come out more cleanly.
Be smart about decorations on the grass
I love a yard full of decorations, but grass needs sunlight. If a big inflatable, a tombstone display or a hay bale sits in one spot on the lawn for weeks, the grass under it can turn yellow. A few tips:
- Set up big decorations closer to the day instead of weeks early.
- Put heavy pieces on mulch, pavers or the driveway when you can.
- When you push in stakes, watch out for sprinkler heads and anything else buried near the surface.
Clean up after the fun
The day after Halloween, take a walk around the yard. Pick up candy wrappers, stakes, fake spider webs and anything that blew around overnight. Fake webs can tangle in shrubs and are much easier to pull off right away. Then take down the decorations that were sitting on the lawn so the grass can get its sunlight back.
